Skiing Woman in Efteling?

Ballonnenvrouwtje nordicwalkt, balloon seller, efteling, eftelist

We feel a little bit silly, in a way.  It’s not that we thought she actually was going to go skiing, but she looked ready for it.  For as long as we can remember, she’s never had balloons.  It’s only after reading on Eftelist that she used to be a ‘balloon seller’ that it all made sense!  With those sticks, we thought she was wanting to go skiing…

This woman actually has a story, just like everything else in Efteling.  Here’s the basics:

She was an old lady who liked to give away balloons to people for free because balloons made her happy, so she was trying to spread the joy herself.  But the people were too busy for balloons and were mean to her.  So she called her friend Jan the wind and he blew her all the way to the Efteling where her dress caught on Sleeping Beauty’s castle turret.  Some gnomes from the forest saw her and stood on each other’s shoulders to help her down.  She’s been there ever since!

If you look closely, she can also be found in Diorama (in miniature, of course).

So yes, Efteling, please do something with this poor old woman!  If not real balloons, maybe she could be given some pretend ones so that she at least feels useful! Oh, and maybe fix the cracks in her hands? Ouch!

More information about the old woman can be found here.

With thanks to Milena.

asparagus, diamond theme park awards, efteling, eftelist, fata morgana, langnek

We’ve been quiet recently, so here’s a little about what is going on in Efteling at the moment:

Apparently, the Efteling Theatre’s next big musical is to be based on the Sandman, (Bosrijk’s mascot) and it will start playing in Autumn.  That is about all is known on the subject at the moment.

On April 11th, the National Asparagus Season was opened by Dutch chef Sandra Ysbrandy as she took the role of ‘Asparagus Ambassador’ for the day.  Efteling’s CEO said that  ‘The opening of the asparagus season in the Efteling is not just a fairy tale, but also a logical choice.’  This happens on the second Thursday of every April, just so that you all know for next year 😉Asparagus

Where did the asparagus go to have a few drinks?

The Salad Bar!

No more jokes, we promise…

In other news, Langnek’s little island is taking shape, with a new rock base being installed for him to sit on.  We still miss him and hope that he comes back soon, as does everyone else, it seems.  Somebody asked Efteling via Twitter about Mr. Longneck’s return, and they said some time in late April he should be back.

Also, according to Eftelist.nl, Fata Morgana is not in the best shape.  We already knew about the snakes that need some cosmetic surgery so that you don’t have to look at their zips, but apparently somebody is missing a limb, (we’re trusting the translation for that one, but haven’t seen actual evidence!) there are stains in the night sky, the fog machines are leaking, (we knew about this one, we’ve felt the drips!) and there’s something not quite right with those crocodiles.  All in all, it needs a bit of TLC.

Efteling has won 6 Diamond Theme Park Awards, including Best Amusement Park, Most Child Friendly Park and Most Beautiful Park.  Click here for full results!

Finally, Efteling attracted a massive 4.2 million visitors for its 60th birthday last year.  I’m sure that many were attracted back to the park this month for the asparagus season launch…

Design of Cinderella Fairy Tale

I will start off by saying that this has previously been mentioned on Eftelist, however it is also something that I noticed the last time I visited Efteling.

Cinderella was installed in the Fairy Tale Forest in 2009, designed by Karel Willemen, who has worked on many Efteling creations, including numerous fairy tales and rides.  The building that Cinderella is housed in is very nice, very large compared to the buildings near to it (Snow White and the Wishing Table).  However, inside, it seems to be rather tiny in comparison to some of the other fairy tales in the forest.  Saying that, none of them are too big, but they all seem to provide enough room for people to move through them at a steady pace, providing everyone with a good view.  In the case of Cinderella, you are presented with a very dark, very small, standing area in front of the scene, with a step in front of you.  Bear in mind that it is dark, so, you probably didn’t see the step when you walked in!  There are also pillars in front of the scene, housing the glass that separates you from Cinderella and the Prince.  Add to the darkness and the pillars a few guests; arm some of them with babies in strollers, and there you have it, a very painful viewing experience.

I mentioned Eftelist at the start of this.  Their issue with the scene was that, unless you are stood at the far right of the scene, you can’t see the most important part of the story: the Prince putting the glass slipper on Cinderella.  If you haven’t seen it before, he does actually do it!  It is kind of clever.  As Eftelist put it, and this is a Google translation, so apologies if it does not say this in Dutch, but it made me laugh anyway…

‘The princely butt blocks the view of the scene almost completely’

So, maybe if we had a side view of the pair, rather than a perfect view of the Prince’s behind, the audience would be a bit happier!

I hope I didn’t bash this fairy tale too much, because it is nice; just not on a busy day when you can’t see it properly.
